Com 109 Finals Week Lab Hours

The COM 109 lab will be open at the following times during the finals week:

  • 12/10 10:30am-6:00pm
  • 12/11 1:00pm-6:00pm
  • 12/14 10:30am-6:00pm
  • 12/15 3:00pm-6:00pm

GR24 Final Project

From this session through the end of the semester, we will concentrate on multiple page publications. Everyone needs to turn in a written proposal specify what your final project will consist of. Your choices are:

  • Magazine
  • Newspaper
  • Newsletter
  • Book
  • Multi-panel, multi-page brochure
  • Catalog
  • Instruction manual
  • Calendar
  • Website Design

You are free to choose the type of publication, the subect matter/content, size, media, and client. You can work for yourself, or you may work with a business or non-profit association. Be forewarned that you are on a deadline, and if you choose to work with or under the direction of another person or organization, you are still obligated to meet all of your class deadlines. There are approximately 5 more weeks to class and 9 sessions. Your final project proposal is due NOW.

As of November 11, you should have:

  • a working dummy for your final project
  • a copy log with page assignments for each element in your publication
  • begun to gather text, photos, illustrations, advertisements, and graphics
  • begun an exploration of color palettes and design

There are no classes on Monday, November 9th. Our next class meeting is Wednesday November 11th.

Create & Edit Paths in Adobe Illustrator

Last week we had an introduction to Adobe Illustrator. Download the three Illustrator templates you’ll find in the Illustrator link on the right side of this page. Templates do not have to be printed…No Folder Necessary. But, you do need to email the completed exercises to me, and they are due tonight, Oct. 29th.

In tonight’s class, we’ll:

  • review of the pen tool for creating and editing paths
  • examine the object drawing tools
  • learn to assign attributes to an object’s appearance
  • learn secrets of transformation (just in time for Halloween)
  • turn photos into vector art
  • and we’ll begin a new…

HOMEWORK PROJECT: Set of Four (or more) Greeting Cards

  • all cards must adhere to a theme
  • cards can be A2s, A6s, or A7s and must include an envelope that fits (we’ll learn how to make our own envelopes, printing the envelope is optional)
  • cards must be tight comps, printed in color

Due at the beginning of class the evening of our Final, Thursday, Dec. 10. The final is scheduled from 6 p.m. – 8 p.m.

Illustrator Type – Seal Exercise

Seal Exercise

OBJECTIVES – The purpose of this exercise is to familiarize you with the following:

• Shape drawing tools
• Palette principles
• Offset paths
• Add anchor points
• Type Tool
• Text Formatting
• Layers
• Export to Photoshop
• Filters

Create a decal, label, seal, or patch that can later be printed and applied to:

  • an envelope
  • a flyer
  • an article of clothing
  • a pillow or blanket as an applique
  • a mode of transportation
  • a cup/mug

Using a photo or illustration, digitally apply the “seal” to a poster for “Club M”. Criteria for the poster is hanging in Com. 109.
